Same distance, two units
The two rulers below show the same physical length, just in different units.
Illustrative scale — not actual size on your screen.

About the calculation
Let A be the entered amount and Fs and Ft the source and target meters-per-unit factors. Convert through meters: M = A × Fs; R = M ÷ Ft.
SI prefixes follow the BIPM SI Brochure; customary and nautical definitions follow NIST references. Calculations keep unrounded values; display uses up to 12 significant digits with half-even rounding.
Swap keeps the internal meter value, but the screen shows at most 12 significant digits. Typing that rounded display back as a new amount can introduce a small difference.
How do a statute mile and a nautical mile differ?
One statute mile (mi) is exactly 1,609.344 m; one nautical mile (nmi) is exactly 1,852 m. Use mi for ordinary road distances and nmi when a route is specified in nautical miles.
Is the visual ruler actual size?
No. Both tracks fit the same physical distance into the same on-screen width. Their tick numbers differ by unit, but screen pixels are not a measuring scale.
Does this include the U.S. survey foot?
No. The foot here is the international foot, exactly 0.3048 m. The legacy U.S. survey foot has a different definition; check the required unit before using historic survey data.
What values can I enter?
Zero is valid. Negative values represent signed displacement, not a negative object length. Scientific notation is accepted; the absolute amount cannot exceed 10²⁴, and a nonzero distance in meters must have an absolute value between 10⁻²⁴ and 10²⁴.
What does Swap preserve?
Swap preserves the physical distance using the unrounded meter value. Changing the From selector instead keeps the typed number and interprets it in the newly selected unit.
Are my inputs private when I share a result?
Conversion runs in your browser, but the current result URL contains the amount and units. Anyone receiving or loading that URL, including the hosting service, can see those parameters. Do not use sensitive values.
